Essex County Club 2025 Golf Intern Brochure
Club History Founded in 1893, Essex was admitted as the sixth member of the USGA and is home to one of the finest Donald Ross courses in the country. Ross landed at Essex shortly after arriving to America and became the club's Head Golf Professional and Superintendent. Years later, he returned to Essex where he designed the course we play today. His home still stands on the golf course and is located off the 15th hole. The architectural philosophy of Donald Ross still guides our golf course decisions. Bruce Hepner, former lead associate under Tom Doak, is the club's consultant architect. Through the years, Essex has hosted many prestigious tournaments. Club members Margaret and Harriot Curtis, donated the Curtis Cup trophy which fosters international competition between female US and GB&I players. The Club was honored to host the 1938 and 2010 Curtis Cup Matches. Other prominent events included the 1995 USGA Women's Mid-Am along with several state and regional competitions. Most recently, Essex hosted the 2020 Massachusetts Women's Amateur Championship and the 2023 Massachusetts Amateur Championship. Essex is home to the oldest Four-Ball tournament in the country. This year, we celebrated the 105th playing of the event and it is a highlight on our club's calendar. Club Facilities & Culture Situated just 24 miles north of Boston, Essex is presently ranked #62 in the country by Golf Magazine, #78 by Golf Digest and #45 (Classic) by GolfWeek. Golf Magazine includes Essex in their list of the top 150 golf courses in the world. The golf course is incredibly unique with its rocky, sloped terrain and many of the holes, especially on the back nine, would be difficult to replicate anywhere in the world. Essex is also home to ten grass and ten clay tennis courts, four pickleball courts, three paddle tennis courts and a full size swimming pool. The practice facilities include a limited range (approximately 150 yards), chipping green, separate short game area and large putting green. Members and guests can use a "driving tee" to hit longer shots early in the morning. Resoundingly, Essex is an active, multi-generational family club, with events and programming for all ages and abilities.
